Le Trou has held its ground in Lyon's 1st arrondissement for over twenty years, just below the slopes of Croix-Rousse, not far from another well-known spot on the local gay scene, Histoire d'Eau. It's a cruising club reserved for men, 18 and over required, and it's become one of the neighborhood's historic landmarks.

You come as you are, no dress code beyond the usual safety rules. The venue doesn't serve alcohol, which sets the tone for an atmosphere geared more toward encounters than a boozy party.

Two floors to play

The club spreads across two levels and packs in the spaces: private cabins, video screens, slings, St. Andrew's crosses, chains, benches, mazes, gloryholes and backrooms. The coat check is secure and the whole place is air conditioned, a detail that matters when the night stretches into the early morning.

There's also a smoking area, for a breather between floors without losing the thread of the evening.

Nights that set the week's rhythm

Le Trou doesn't just open its doors, it runs weekly themed nights. Sunday and Tuesday are Naked nights. Thursday is underwear-free night. Friday and Saturday bring their own themes, which pack in a loyal crowd.

Opening hours follow this rhythm: 2pm to midnight Wednesday to Thursday and on Sunday, and until 3am on Friday and Saturday. Closed Monday and Tuesday (except for Tuesday's themed night).

• 7-entry pass: 55 euros, valid for one year
• 10-entry pass: 55 euros, valid for one month
