Plage des Casernes ranks among the most well known spots on the Landes coastline, known to surfers and naturists alike. The fine sand stretches as far as the eye can see, framed by dunes and a forest that give the place a wild feel right away.

Out of season, the atmosphere changes completely: the beach empties out, almost deserted, and settles into a calm that suits those seeking nudity without the crowds.

The naturist zone, set apart

The area reserved for naturism sits about 400 meters north of the first aid post. It's a clearly identified zone, long tolerated, where nudity is freely practiced on the sand.

One thing to know before settling in: swimming is strictly forbidden in this specific zone, even though it remains allowed on the rest of the supervised beach during the summer season. Nudity, though, isn't affected by that ban.

Atmosphere and crowd

Here you'll find a mix of traditional naturists enjoying the setting and gay couples who appreciate the discretion offered by the surrounding dunes. Reports describe a fairly free atmosphere, with practices ranging from classic naturism to more alternative habits depending on the corner you choose.

This mix of crowds is part of the place's reputation: nobody bats an eye at running into very different profiles on the same sand.

To reach the beach, park in the designated lot then walk a little through the dunes and forest along marked paths. In summer, first aid posts keep watch and several surf schools animate the central, more crowded part of the beach.
