A naturist beach recognized for nearly 50 years

In Martigues, Bonnieu beach is nothing like some improvised wild spot. Its naturist status was set by a municipal decree in July 1975, making it a safe bet for regulars of the textile-free scene in Provence. It's managed by the association Martigues Nature Soleil, affiliated with the Fédération française de naturisme.

This isn't free, anonymous access: the beach runs on a membership system, and association members get priority during the season. That changes the vibe compared to a classic naturist cove, more club spirit than passing-through lazing about.

Rates and access conditions

For drop-in visitors, temporary entry costs 10 euros, valid for two days maximum. Those who come back regularly are better off taking the annual membership with the association, at 50 euros, which gives easier access for the whole season.

Nudity is mandatory on the beach, except for children. House rules govern attendance, in a spirit that's clearly family-oriented rather than geared toward swinging or cruising.

The setting: pebbles, sand and 300 meters of coastline

The beach stretches over about 300 meters, with a mix of pebbles and sand depending on the section. It's not the biggest stretch on the Martigues coastline, but it's maintained and well kept, with good attendance during the summer high season.

Feedback from regulars is clearly positive: the site's long history and family atmosphere come up often in comments. The only downside mentioned is precisely that priority access for members, which can frustrate passing naturists who were hoping for a fully open beach.

How to get there

Access is via the A55 motorway, Martigues Lavéra exit, then following signs toward EDF Ponteau. Free parking is available on site, which makes organizing a beach day simple, no parking hassle.

The season runs from May 1st to October 6th, so it's a seasonal beach, closed the rest of the year for safety reasons and site monitoring.
