A hidden cove beneath the cliffs
The Anse de l'Arène, everyone here just calls it Cap Canaille, tucks itself in at the foot of the highest cliffs on the French coastline. The setting is breathtaking: the ochre rock drops almost vertically into deep blue water, and the resulting pebble cove stays tiny, almost secret.
It is not an officially designated naturist beach, but the practice settled in long ago and nobody bats an eye about it locally. Nudity is free here, with no signage or particular regulatory framework.
An access that filters visitors
You get there from the Cap Canaille road, past the Cassis stadium, then you have to climb down. The path isn't set up for strollers or wheeled suitcases, and that's precisely what protects the place from mass crowds.
As for parking, two options: a paid lot at a reasonable rate with a limited number of spots, and a small free lot a bit further on. In summer, better to know that both fill up fast in the morning.
Atmosphere and crowd
The beach draws a mixed crowd: couples, families, regular naturists, but also single men who tend to gather on the left side of the spot. The overall vibe stays calm, far from the bustle of Cassis's town center beaches.
The pebble and rock ground calls for a thick towel or a mat, there's no equipment on site, no shower, no snack bar. You come here for the silence and the scenery, not for comfort.
Swimming and diving
The water is described as particularly clear and quickly deep from the shore, which makes it a spot worth noting for free diving. Confident swimmers enjoy heading out a bit further and taking in the view of the cliffs from the open water.
What the regulars say
Feedback from naturists who know the place all points to the same thing: it's the tricky access that guarantees the calm. You arrive early, you leave late, and in between you enjoy a setting many call spectacular.
The one downside comes up just as often: the parking lot fills up fast in high season, and showing up after 10am on a scorching day sometimes means turning back empty handed. A beach to save for days when you can get up early.
