A beach apart in la Manche
La Pointe du Banc, in Saint-Germain-sur-Ay, is the only naturist beach in the department with official municipal authorisation. That status has existed since 11 January 1999, which makes it a solid landmark for anyone looking for a recognised spot, not some improvised corner.
We're on the west coast of the Cotentin here, facing Jersey, right where the river Ay meets the sea. The setting is that of a wild Norman coastline, with well kept dunes and a very fine sand that gives the place all its charm.
Two zones, clearly marked out
The beach stretches over 300 metres reserved for naturism, the zone being marked by two official signs at the start and at the end. Right next to the car park sits a classic family zone, textile if you prefer.
The naturist part starts about 150 metres further south. The separation is clear, which avoids any misunderstanding between visitors and lets everyone choose their side without ambiguity.
Access and facilities
You get there via avenue de la Pointe du Banc, which you follow all the way to the end of the road. The car park, free of charge, sits right at the edge of the beach, and stairs built into the dunes make the way down to the sand easy.
On site, there are toilets and showers, which isn't so common on French naturist beaches. Access is free all year round, weather permitting, with no fixed hours and no entry fee.
Atmosphere and management
The beach is run by the association Saint-Germain Naturisme, which looks after the dunes and keeps a respectful climate between users. Feedback describes a peaceful atmosphere, a genuine naturist spirit where mutual respect comes before everything else.
You'll come across couples, families and regulars from all over the region, la Pointe du Banc being regularly mentioned as one of the best known naturist beaches in Normandy. The calm of the place and the quality of the dune environment come up often in visitor comments.
