Plage des Nudistes

The only one of its kind in Caledonia

In Nouville, about 300 meters south of Kuendu Beach, you'll find the Plage des Nudistes tucked away. It's, to this day, the only spot in New Caledonia where naturism is tolerated, even if nothing makes it an official site.

No sign, no regulatory zoning: just a long-standing habit among the local regulars.

A ground that makes itself felt

Here, no fine sand. The beach is made of coral, a sharp terrain that makes walking and swimming downright uncomfortable without proper footwear. Better to know that before setting bare foot on it.

Shade is rare, and the Caledonian summer hits this stretch of the east coast hard. A hat, water and sun protection aren't luxuries here.

Getting there without a car

Access is easy by public transport, via bus line L3, which explains part of its clientele. For those coming by car, you'll need to park near Kuendu Beach and continue on foot.

No entrance fee, no fixed hours: access is free year round. On the other hand, there are no toilets or food stands on site, so come prepared.

Regulars and caution

The beach mostly attracts local nudists and a few hikers who push on this far from Kuendu Beach. The regulars appreciate precisely the lack of commercialization and the discretion of the place, far from Nouméa's touristy beaches.

That same discretion has a downside: the spot isn't watched, and several accounts mention opportunistic thefts of belongings left unattended. Come light, without valuables, and keep an eye on your things.

As for scenery, the view of Nouméa from this stretch of coast is regularly mentioned as one of the place's draws, almost a compensation for the coral ground and the lack of shade.
