Dildo

The dildo (godemichet in French, often written godemiché and shortened to "gode" in everyday speech) is an elongated object, solid or hollow, meant to be inserted into the vagina or the anus. It does not necessarily vibrate: in its most classic definition, it's a penetration accessory with no motor.

Its shape ranges from the very realistic (veins, glans, flesh tone) to the completely abstract, curved, wavy or smooth like an elongated pebble. Materials change everything: medical silicone is supple and soft, borosilicate glass and steel are hard, heavy, and can be warmed up or cooled down at will under running water.

As for use, rule number one comes down to one word: lube, and plenty of it. Then, take your time. Rest the tip at the entrance first, let the body open up on its own, go in just a few centimetres, then play with rhythm rather than depth. Many women actually prefer firm pressure towards the front wall of the vagina, or a free hand on the clitoris at the same time.

For the anus, one precaution is non negotiable: the toy must have a wide base or a ring, otherwise it can travel up and become impossible to retrieve on your own. The gel needs to be thicker and reapplied often, and you never go from anal to vaginal use without washing the object or changing the condom wrapped around it.

Care comes down to very little: lukewarm water and mild soap after each session, thorough drying, storage away from dust. Two useful details: avoid silicone based lubes on a silicone toy (the lube damages the surface), and put a condom on as soon as the object is shared between partners. In case of pain, bleeding or persistent irritation, stop and see a doctor or a sex therapist.

The dildo is often confused with its cousins. The vibrator vibrates and tends to target the clitoris, the anal plug is short, conical and stays in place, the penis extension or sleeve is worn over a partner's sex, and the strap on dildo attaches to a harness to penetrate the other person. Some suction cup models stick to a wall or a shower panel, for hands free solo use.
