Deep throat

Deep throat refers to oral sex taken far, where the partner's cock is no longer just in the mouth but reaches the entrance of the throat. It's one variation among others, not an advanced level nor proof of skill.

Plenty of people can't manage it, or simply don't want to, and a blow job stays delicious without going that far. Let's say it straight away, there's no performance to validate here.

The main obstacle is called the gag reflex, that little heave that kicks in when you touch the back of the palate or the base of the tongue. It can be tamed a little, but never by force: you go in short stages, you come back up, you start again. Two things really help: breathing through the nose and exhaling as you go down, and letting saliva come in abundance (a dry mouth makes everything unpleasant).

Position matters as much as technique, because the point is to line up the mouth and the throat. On your back, head slightly tipped back at the edge of the bed, or the other way round, leaning over your partner, the passage happens more naturally than with the head upright. Ideally, the person giving the blow job keeps control of the rhythm and the depth, hands resting on the other's hips or thighs to slow things down when needed.

Since you can't talk in that position, you agree on a signal beforehand, tapping the thigh twice for example, and the other stops dead. A hand on the back of the neck or thrusting hips never happen without explicit agreement, and yesterday's yes doesn't count for tonight. Tears, coughing, saliva, a slightly raw throat, all of that is ordinary, but if the pain or the irritation persists, talk to a doctor, and remember that oral sex can also transmit infections (a condom, flavoured if you like, is still the answer).

It's often confused with classic oral sex, where the stimulation focuses on the head and the base with the hand, and with irrumatio, an older term for the reverse case, where the penetrating partner does the moving. The name comes from a 1972 film that became a cultural phenomenon, whose heroine discovered this practice, and which even lent its title to the famous Watergate informant.
